Sue leaves Richard and she and Jude begin a family, although they refuse to marry. But there's a building and tempting chemistry between the two cousins and soon they're having an affair. Jude gets her a job working for Richard Philloston (LIAM CUNNINGHAM), an old acquaintance, and eventually Sue and Richard are married. After briefly being married to Arabella Dunn (RACHEL GRIFFITHS), a woman he thought he impregnated, Jude meets his cousin Sue Bridehead (KATE WINSLET), an independent and head strong woman who also wants to be a teacher. PLOT: Near the end of the nineteenth century, Jude Fawley (CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON), a stone mason, wants to be accepted into Christminster, a theological university. Though the two realize their destinies are intertwined, when he reveals his previous marriage, she is deeply hurt and in a perverse act of retaliation, marries another man. Toward this goal, when his wife Arabella leaves him, he moves to Christminster where he meets and falls recklessly in love with Sue, his beautiful and intelligent cousin. Late 19th century England Jude, an intelligent but unworldly stonemason, looks to escape rural poverty by gaining a university education. When his wife leaves, he moves to the city, where he befriends his liberal cousin Sue. In late 1800s England, Jude plans to go to the city and attend university but marries early and becomes a stonemason.
